Foundations:
Intuitive Eating and Self Attunement
What if changing your relationship with food could also change the way you relate to yourself?
Feeding yourself is one of the most ordinary forms of self-care. We do it every day and yet for many of us, eating has become tangled with rules, guilt, second-guessing, body image, conflicting health advice, and the constant question of whether we're doing it “right.”
Foundations is a small therapy group built around the principles of Intuitive Eating and the idea that our relationship with food can be a powerful place to practice something bigger: noticing our needs, responding to our bodies, questioning rules that no longer serve us, and treating ourselves with greater curiosity and compassion.
This isn't a group about finding the perfect way to eat. And it isn't another plan for getting food “right.” It's an opportunity to get curious about what has shaped your relationship with food—and begin building greater attunement, flexibility and trust in yourself.

Why talk about Food in Therapy?
We often talk about self-care as something we need to make more time for. But some of the most fundamental forms of caring for ourselves are already happening every day.
We get hungry. We get tired. We become overwhelmed. We need rest, movement, connection, comfort, stimulation, and quiet.
The challenge is often not whether we have needs. It's whether we notice them, trust them, and believe we're allowed to respond to them.
Food gives us a concrete place to explore that relationship.
You don't need to have a full disordered eating pattern to want to look at this relationship more closely. It is so foundational to a LOT of other pieces of mental health.
-
How much of our social anxiety around events is really food anxiety?
-
How much of routine disruptions get compounded with expectations about eating?
-
How much of conflict with our partner about how, when, and what to eat is compounded by food rules?
-
Do I truly know what my body likes, doesn't like, thrives on, or just what has been ingrained as good/bad?
-
Do I know how to feed myself with a rhythm that doesn't create stress or internal conflict?
-
Does the "I should" language dominate internally before food decisions?
-
Can I notice discomfort without immediately judging myself?
-
Can I respond with curiosity instead of criticism?
Those aren't only questions about eating.
They're questions about attunement, self-trust, self-compassion, and the relationship you're building with yourself.
This isn't another set of food rules.
Participants will explore:
-
diet culture and the messages they've absorbed about food and bodies
-
recognizing hunger and other internal cues
-
making peace with food and reducing deprivation
-
satisfaction and pleasure in eating
-
fullness and satiation
-
the “food police,” self-criticism and guilt
-
body attunement and noticing needs without judgment
-
curiosity and self-compassion when old patterns show up
The goal is to find a way to have internal peace with how you inhabit your body; understand how to hold both self- acceptance and growth; and develop a kind of self compassion that can stand up to the journey.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to have read Intuitive Eating before joining?
No. You do not need previous experience with Intuitive Eating to participate. We’ll introduce and explore the principles together and participants will follow along with The Intuitive Eating Workbook during the group.
Is this a weight-loss group?
No. Foundations is not a weight-loss program, diet plan, or nutrition program. The group focuses on Intuitive Eating, self-attunement, and your relationship with food and yourself rather than pursuing weight change as an outcome.
Do I have to already believe in Intuitive Eating?
No. You’re welcome to bring questions, uncertainty, skepticism, and your own experiences into the room. The goal isn’t to convince you to adopt a particular way of eating. It’s to give you space to understand the principles, explore your responses to them, and discover what you notice through the process.
What if I've tried Intuitive Eating before?
You’re still welcome. Understanding Intuitive Eating intellectually and practicing it in your own life can be very different experiences. The group provides space to look more closely at what happens when you try to apply these ideas including the places that feel natural, confusing, uncomfortable, or difficult to sustain.
Is this an eating disorder treatment group?
Foundations is not designed to provide a higher level of eating disorder treatment. Your first individual session gives us an opportunity to talk about your current relationship with food and make sure the group is an appropriate fit for your needs.
Why are individual sessions included?
Intuitive Eating is personal work. Your first individual session gives us space to understand your starting point, experiences, and goals before you enter the group. Your final session gives us space to make meaning of what you discovered, identify what you want to continue practicing, and consider what support may be useful going forward.
What happens during the group sessions?
Expect more than a discussion of a book. We’ll use Intuitive Eating concepts as a starting point for reflection, experiential exercises, group conversation, and practice. You’ll explore your own patterns and experiences while also learning alongside other people doing the same work.
What if I don't want to share something personal with the group?
You choose what you share. Participation matters in a therapy group, but participation does not mean disclosing every part of your experience. We want members to practice curiosity, reflection and connection while maintaining agency over their own stories.
Is this group therapy?
Yes. Foundations is a clinician-led therapy group rather than a class, workshop, or book club. The group combines Intuitive Eating education with therapeutic reflection, experiential practice, group processing, and individual sessions before and after the group experience.
Who can participate?
Foundations is available to adults located in California during sessions. Because this is a therapy group, we'll also make sure during the initial individual session that the group is an appropriate fit for your current needs.
